Iceland 2 (9/4/2019 to 9/8/2019)At Haukafell we left Vatnajokull National Park behind and entered the east and northeast part of Iceland. In the next couple of days we visited Egilsstadhir, Djupivogur, Seydhisfjordhur, Lake Myvatn (Reykjahlidh) and the great waterfalls Dettifoss, Selfoss and Godhafoss.

Haukafell
Welcoming committee. -
Lagarfjlót
The very long, beautiful lake near Egilstadhir in eastern central Iceland. -
The maiden and the snake
In the library at Fljótsdalshéradh, near Egilstadhir. Illustrates a folk tale about a maiden who throws a box into a lake and the worm in the box turns into a monster like the one in Scotland's Loch Ness. For more info (including the story) see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagarfljót_Worm -
Seydhisfjordhur
A somewhat whimsical art "installation" placed here in 2006 on the centennial anniversary of Iceland's getting a telegraph cable connecting it to Scotland. The phone booth has a phone number! -

Near Myvatn
Lots of conspicuous geothermal activity in this region. We took a bath in pools fed by the hot springs; the baths are visible in the background here, on the right. -
Turf house at Hjardharhagi farm
These once were very common in Iceland. This one was in use until the 1970s. -
Dettifoss
It's a bit of a hike from the small parking lot to the waterfall but you can hear the roar of the water the whole way. -
Dettifoss

Dettifoss

Selfoss
This is not Selfoss the town (in southwest Iceland) but Selfoss the waterfall (in northeast Iceland). This waterfall lies about a kilometer upstream from Dettifoss. -
Between Dettifoss and Selfoss
Basalt cliffs on the west side of the river between Dettifoss (off to the left/north) and Selfoss (to the right/south).
This panorama was stitched together in Lightroom from seven separate shots. YOU MAY NEED TO SCROLL LEFT AND RIGHT TO SEE IT ALL. -
Godhafoss
Seeing Dettifoss, Selfoss and Godhafoss on the same day was almost overwhelming, a bit like it might be to listen to Beethoven's third, fifth and ninth symphonies in a single day. -
Akureyri
Akureyri in the north is one of Iceland's largest metropolitan areas (after Reykjavik). We stopped there for a delicious lunch of fresh fish and chips and a little window shopping, before heading north -
Siglufjordhur
Inside one of the buildings dedicated to the herring fishing industry in northern Iceland. It was centered in this town, Siglufjordhur. One thing that was interesting was to see how much heavy industry is involved in the fishing biz: Not so much the catching of the fish as the processing of them. -
